Nilgiri Tahr Population in Tamil Nadu Rises to 1,364
  • The Tamil Nadu Forest Department conducted a coordinated census across 14 forest divisions from April 24 to 27 under 'Project Nilgiri Tahr'. The survey estimated the Nilgiri Tahr population in Tamil Nadu at 1,364. 
  • The population, which stood at 1,031 in 2024 and 1,030 in 2025, has now risen further in 2026, marking a positive recovery trend. This represents a 4.68 percent increase compared to the 2025 count. 
  • Data on the Tahrs sighted in the wild indicates that adult females constitute 38.4 percent and adult males 34.6 percent of the population. 
  • The sex ratio is healthy, with 55 males for every 100 females (55:100). Additionally, yearlings (one-year-olds) accounted for 15.5 percent, and young calves for 11.5 percent of the recorded population.

  • The Diamond League athletics meet was held in Rome, Italy. In the men's javelin throw event, Sri Lanka's Rumesh Pathirage won the championship title by throwing the javelin a distance of 92.62 meters.
  • His performance marks the second-longest throw in the history of Asian athletics. With this feat, Rumesh Pathirage has surpassed the record held by Indian star athlete Neeraj Chopra (90.23m). 
  • Pathirage has earned the distinction of being the fourth Asian athlete and the 28th in the history of athletics to breach the historic 90-meter mark.
