Deemed-to-be-University Status for NCERT
- The University Grants Commission (UGC) has granted 'Deemed-to-be-University' status to the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT), an institution whose primary mandate is the development of educational curricula.
- The Union Ministry of Education has announced that the NCERT has been officially declared a 'Deemed-to-be-University,' thereby empowering it to confer its own academic degrees.
- Acting upon the recommendation of the University Grants Commission (UGC), the Union Ministry of Education has designated the NCERT—along with the six institutions operating under its aegis—as a 'Deemed-to-be-University' under a distinct category.
- These six institutions include the Regional Institutes of Education located in Ajmer, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Mysore, and Shillong, as well as the Pandit Sundarlal Sharma Central Institute of Vocational Education situated in Bhopal.
- In Myanmar, following the dissolution of the democratically elected government led by Aung San Suu Kyi in 2021, the military—under the leadership of Commander-in-Chief Min Aung Hlaing—seized power and established a military administration. Subsequently, elections conducted by this military regime resulted in the selection of 584 new members of parliament.
- It is alleged that these elections were orchestrated primarily to perpetuate the military regime's hold on power and that the voting process was neither conducted freely nor in accordance with democratic principles.
- Against this backdrop, three candidates—including the head of the military regime, Min Aung Hlaing—contested for the office of Myanmar's new President. On Friday (April 2), the Speaker of the country's Parliament, Aung Lin Twe, announced that Min Aung Hlaing had emerged victorious in the election, securing 429 out of the total 584 votes cast.
- Following this, Min Aung Hlaing has been elected as the new President of Myanmar, while the two individuals who contested against him and were defeated have been elected as Vice Presidents.
- Notably, Min Aung Hlaing had previously resigned from his position as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, as Myanmar's Constitution prohibits the country's President from simultaneously holding the office of Commander of the Three Forces.
