March 2026 GST Collections
  • GST collections for the month of March have crossed the ₹2 lakh crore mark. This represents a 9 percent increase compared to the amount collected in March of the previous year. This marks the third-highest monthly GST revenue recorded during the 2025-26 financial year; collections stood at ₹2.36 lakh crore in April and ₹2.01 lakh crore in May. In March of the previous year, collections totaled ₹1.83 lakh crore.
  • For this financial year alone, total GST collections have amounted to ₹22.27 lakh crore. Domestic revenue has increased by 5.9 percent, reaching ₹1.46 lakh crore, while revenue generated from imports has risen by 17.8 percent to ₹53,861 crore.
  • The Central Government implemented reforms to the GST regime in September of last year. Tax rates on 375 commodities were reduced, and the existing four-tier tax structure was streamlined into two tiers.
  • A 40 percent GST rate was levied exclusively on tobacco and luxury goods. In the immediate month following these changes, GST collections witnessed a decline; however, they subsequently rebounded—rising to ₹1.70 lakh crore in November, ₹1.74 lakh crore in December, and ₹1.93 lakh crore in January of this year.
  • While collections had dipped to ₹1.83 lakh crore last February, the March collections have now surged past the ₹2 lakh crore milestone.
Amaravati to be Andhra's Sole Capital: Bill Passed in Lok Sabha
  • When Telangana was carved out as a separate state from Andhra Pradesh, it was announced—in accordance with Section 5(2) of the relevant Act—that Hyderabad would temporarily serve as the common capital for both states.
  • It was further stipulated that upon the completion of a 10-year period, Hyderabad would continue to serve as the capital exclusively for the state of Telangana. At that time, Chandrababu Naidu, who was serving as the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, undertook efforts to develop Amaravati as the state capital.
  • However, upon assuming office as Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh in 2019, Jagan Mohan Reddy sought to implement a "three capitals" plan, designating Amaravati as the legislative capital, Kurnool as the judicial capital, and Visakhapatnam as the executive capital. Nevertheless, in 2021, the Jagan Mohan Reddy administration withdrew this plan.
  • Having once again assumed the office of Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, the Chandrababu Naidu-led government passed a resolution urging the Central Government to recognize Amaravati as the state's sole capital and to accord it statutory protection.
  • Against this backdrop, Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai introduced the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill on Wednesday, aimed at establishing Amaravati as the sole capital of Andhra Pradesh.
  • While YSR Congress MPs staged a walkout in protest against the bill, it was subsequently passed via a voice vote.
