India Slips to 6th Place Among Major Economies
- In the ranking of major economies released by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), India has slipped from the 5th position to the 6th. Britain, meanwhile, has advanced from the 6th position to the 5th.
- It is reported that India has dropped one spot primarily due to the depreciation of the Indian Rupee against the US Dollar, as well as the revision of the base year for calculating the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) from 2011-12 to 2022-23.
- The Central Government had anticipated that India would overtake Japan to advance to the 4th position. According to IMF data, India's GDP stood at US$ 3.76 trillion in 2024, while Britain's GDP was US$ 3.7 trillion.
- However, while India's GDP value was US$ 3.92 trillion last year, Britain's GDP rose to US$ 4 trillion. Despite being a rapidly growing major economy, the Indian Rupee has witnessed a decline in value against the US Dollar over the past few months.
- The value of the Indian Rupee against the US Dollar depreciated from 84.57 in 2024 to 88.48 in 2025. It is expected to decline further this year, reaching 92.59. Conversely, the value of the British Pound has been strengthening against the US Dollar.
- Based on IMF data, it is indicated that India will retain the 6th position among major economies this year, when assessed based on current exchange rates. Nevertheless, it is anticipated that by next year, India will surpass not only Britain but also Japan to advance to the 4th position. If the current trend continues, India will overtake Germany in 2031 to reach the third position.
