The Supreme Court overturned the interim stay imposed by the High Court in the case related to the appointment of Vice-Chancellors
  • The Tamil Nadu government had amended the law to allow the Chief Minister to appoint Vice-Chancellors for universities in the state and had sent it to Governor R.N. Ravi for approval a few months ago.
  • This amendment, along with several other bills, had been pending at the Governor's office for a long time. The Tamil Nadu government filed a case against this in the Supreme Court.
  • The Supreme Court, after hearing the case, used its special powers to grant approval to 10 bills. Among these 10 bills was the amendment allowing the Chief Minister to appoint Vice-Chancellors for universities.
  • Following this, a case was filed in the Madurai Bench of the High Court against the Chief Minister appointing Vice-Chancellors. The court, after hearing the case, issued an interim stay on this amendment.
  • The Tamil Nadu government filed a petition in the Supreme Court against this. The Tamil Nadu government argued that the Chennai High Court had imposed the interim stay hastily without fully hearing the case.
  • In this context, the Supreme Court, in its judgment today (Feb 4), lifted the interim stay issued by the High Court regarding the appointment of Vice-Chancellors.
  • The Supreme Court judges, after lifting the stay, ordered the Chennai High Court to hear the case again. The Supreme Court also ordered the High Court to complete the hearing within six weeks and directed that no new Vice-Chancellors should be appointed until then.
