Ancient stone pillar discovered in Thattraalli, Krishnagiri
- Based on information provided by archaeologist Sadananda Krishnakumar, the Krishnagiri Historical Research and Documentation Team and the Government Museum jointly conducted a field survey at the foot of the Murugan Temple between the villages of Sobanur and Ottapatti under Thattraalli panchayat. At that time, an ancient stone pillar was discovered on a private property there.
- This pillar is a Neolithic monument. It is about 2,000 to 3,000 years old. Such pillars erected in memory of those who died during that period are rarely found in Krishnagiri district. This is the second largest stone pillar discovered in the district after the Samanthamalai stone pillar.
- It is 8.5 feet high, 5 feet wide and 1 foot thick. These stones are the predecessors of the stones placed at the head of tombs today. References to these kuthukkals (stones) have been made in the Sangam literatures of Punanuru and Akananuru. This is evidence of its antiquity and Tamil culture.
- Such kuthukkals are erected to honor the memory of leaders who have led the people, either due to old age or if they have died bravely in battle. Generally, a stone circle is erected around this stone.
- Over time, when agricultural land is leveled, the surrounding stones are removed and converted into land boundaries. It is said that these stones later became the center stones.
