A thousand-year-old coin discovered near Mudukulathur
- Selvanayakapuram is located near Mudukulathur in Ramanathapuram district. Prasith Balan, a 10th-grade student at the government higher secondary school there, found something resembling a coin lying on the ground.
- When he examined this ancient coin, it was revealed to be an Eezhakkasu (Sri Lankan coin) approximately a thousand years old. It was also discovered that the name of Rajaraja Chola I was inscribed on the coin.
- These Eezhakkasu coins were issued as a special edition following Rajaraja Chola I's conquest of Sri Lanka. They were in use from the time of Rajaraja Chola I to the time of Kulothunga Chola I.
- These coins were issued in gold, silver, and copper. Although minted for use in Sri Lanka, they were also in circulation in the territories under Chola rule.
- On one side of the coin, a figure is depicted standing with a flower in hand, with four circles to his left. Above these circles is a crescent moon and below them a flower. To his right are a trident and a lamp.
- On the other side, a figure is seated holding a conch shell in his hand, and near his left hand, the words "Sri Rajaraja" are inscribed in three lines in Devanagari script. The inscription is not clear due to moss growth on the coin, and the edges are worn.
