Tamil Nadu government signs agreement with HP, Dell, Acer to provide free laptops
  • In the Tamil Nadu government's budget for 2025-26, it has been planned to provide high-tech devices to all college students in Tamil Nadu, including various arts, science, engineering, medicine, and agriculture, and in the first phase, it was announced that 20 lakh college students will be provided with a tablet or laptop based on their choice in the next 2 years. For this, a fund of Rs. 2 thousand crore has been allocated in the current year as the first phase.
  • In this situation, the Tamil Nadu government is purchasing a laptop for Rs. 21,650 under the scheme to provide free laptops to college students.
  • In the first phase, Elcat has given a work order to 3 companies, HP, Dell, and Acer, to purchase 10 lakh laptops. It plans to complete the distribution of laptops by the end of March.
Thayumanavar Scheme age limit relaxed from 70 to 65
  • The Dravidian model government led by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin is implementing several welfare schemes for special categories of people like the elderly, the differently-abled, and transgenders.
  • One of them, the Thayumanavar Scheme, which provides ration items directly to the homes of the elderly and differently-abled above 70 years of age, was launched on August 12. Under this scheme, civic goods are distributed to the homes of the beneficiaries on the second Saturday and Sunday of every month.
  • Now, the Tamil Nadu government has announced that the age limit for this scheme has been reduced from 70 to 65. This will benefit many more elderly people across the state.
October 2025 GST collection 1.95 lakh crore
  • The Union Finance Ministry is issuing a notification on the GST amount collected in the previous month across the country on the first day of every month.
  • In this regard, the GST collection details for the month of October were released on Saturday. Accordingly, the GST collection in October, which was Rs 1.89 lakh crore in September, increased by 4.6 percent to Rs 195.936 crore.
  • This is 9 percent more than the amount collected in October 2024 last year. For the last 10 consecutive months, GST collection has been exceeding Rs 1.8 lakh crore.
  • Meanwhile, the GST system was changed and a two-rate system (5%, 18%) was implemented on September 22. It is noteworthy that due to this, the prices of most goods have come down.
