PM flags off electric bus service in Delhi
  • As part of the Delhi Government's initiative to promote sustainable development and clean urban mobility, the Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, flagged off the electric bus service. The Prime Minister said that electric bus service will help in making Delhi cleaner and greener. He further stated that this move will make life easier for the people of Delhi.
Census 2027 with caste-wise enumeration to be conducted in two phases
  • It has been decided to conduct Census 2027 with caste-wise enumeration in two phases. The cut-off date for this census will be 00:00 hrs on 01 March 2027. The cut-off date for the census for the Union Territory of Ladakh, the snow-covered areas of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand will be 00:00 hrs on 01 October 2026. 
  • The notification of the purpose of conducting the Census of India with the above dates will be published in the Official Gazette on 16.06.2025 (approximately) under Section 3 of the Census Act.
  • The Census of India was conducted under the Census Act, 1948 and the Census Rules, 1990. The last Census of India was conducted in 2011 in two phases. The first phase was for the enumeration of households (from 1 April to 30 September 2010) and the second phase was for the enumeration of population (from 09 February to 28 February 2011), the cut-off date for which was 00:00 hrs on 01 March 2011. The cut-off date for Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand was 00:00 hrs on 01 October 2010.
  • While all the initial preparations for Census 2021 have been completed, the field work was to begin in some states and union territories from April 1, 2020. However, the census was postponed due to the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic across the country.
India elected as a member of the UN Economic and Social Council
  • The Economic and Social Council is one of the 6 main bodies of the UN. The Council is taking steps to ensure sustainable development in economic, social and environmental matters.
  • The Council is also taking steps to achieve internationally agreed goals. The Council will also monitor whether the decisions taken at the conferences held on behalf of the UN are being implemented properly. The UN Economic and Social Council can have 54 countries as members. Countries are elected regionally for a term of 3 years
  • 11 countries from the Asian continent, 14 countries from the African continent, 6 countries from Eastern European regions, 10 countries from the South American continent and 13 countries from other regions will be elected as members of the Council.
  • In this context, India has been elected as a member of the UN Economic and Social Council for the year 2026-28. The term of office will be for 3 years from January 1, 2026. India was last elected to this Council 4 times from 2008 to 2020. Now, India has been elected as a member of this Council for the 18th time.
  • The UN Economic and Social Council is considered an important body that plays an important role in recommending policies related to economic and social issues.
India elected to chair International Institute of Administrative Sciences
  • India has been a member of the International Institute of Administrative Sciences since 1998. The International Institute of Administrative Sciences is a consortium of 31 member countries, 20 national chapters and 15 academic research centres that collaborate on scientific research in public administration.
  • Key member countries include India, Japan, China, Germany, Italy, Korea, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Switzerland, Mexico, Spain, Qatar, Morocco, Indonesia, etc.
  • The International Institute of Administrative Sciences (IIAS) maintains a close working relationship with the United Nations. Although IIAS is not a formal UN body, it actively participates in the UN’s work on public administration.
  • The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, has nominated Shri V. Srinivas, Secretary, Department of Administrative Reforms, Government of India, for the post of Chair of IIAS for the period 2025-2028.
  • The selection process for the presidency was held in February 2025. India, South Africa, Austria and Bahrain participated in the selection process of the IIAS Executive Council. Subsequently, the nominations of representatives of India, South Africa and Austria were sent to the IIAS General Committee for the next round of selection.
  • South Africa withdrew its candidacy in May 2025 in favor of India. The election between India and Austria was held on 3 June 2025, with 141 votes cast. India won by a wide margin, securing 87 votes (61.7 percent of the vote). Austria lost by securing 54 votes (38.3 percent of the vote).
