Bill to provide 10% tax on artistic performances held in educational institutions - Governor Ravi approves
  • Local bodies are empowered to levy and collect tax on entertainment and amusements specified in the Tamil Nadu Local Bodies Entertainment Tax Act. But there are currently no laws empowering them to levy and collect entertainment tax on any musical performance, drama, show or other event held by any institution, including an educational institution, for which a permit fee is charged.
  • Therefore, the government has decided to provide a mechanism for local bodies to levy and collect 10% entertainment tax on the permit fee for such events. For this, the Tamil Nadu Local Government Bodies Entertainment Tax Act is being amended and a new section is being added.
  • Accordingly, the bill has been passed to collect 10 percent entertainment tax on the admission fee of musical performances, plays, shows or other events held in the premises of educational institutions, associations, groups, corporations, and institutions established in the name of anyone and places where fees such as entrance tickets or contributions or subscriptions are required.
  • In this situation, the Governor of Tamil Nadu R.N. Ravi has approved this bill. The bill passed by the Tamil Nadu government has been published in the Official Gazette after Governor R.N. Ravi has approved it.

  • The first of eight indigenously designed anti-submarine warfare ships to be built by Kolkata’s Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) was delivered to the Indian Navy at the L&T shipyard in Kattupalli today (May 08, 2025).
  • The ship has been designed and built under the L&T, GRSE Public-Private Partnership (PPP) programme. It demonstrates the success of public-private partnerships in defence manufacturing.
  • The ship has been named after the historic fort ‘Arnala’ near Vasai, Maharashtra, reflecting India’s rich maritime heritage. The 77-metre-long warship is the largest naval warship to be powered by both diesel and waterjet propulsion.
  • The ship is designed for underwater surveillance, search and rescue operations, and low-intensity maritime operations. The induction of this ship will significantly enhance the anti-submarine warfare capabilities of the Indian Navy. Built with over 80% indigenous content, the ship embodies the government's vision of a self-reliant India.
