CBI Director Praveen Sood's tenure extended by one year
- CBI is one of the important investigative agencies in our country. CBI has successfully investigated many important cases of the country. CBI will identify the culprits correctly and take action even in complex cases.
- Praveen Sood was the director of this CBI organization. He took office in May 2023 and his tenure was for two years. Accordingly, as his tenure was about to end this month, the central government has ordered an extension of it by one year.
- Last Monday, a meeting was held in Delhi under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding the appointment of a new CBI director. Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi among others participated in this meeting. Officials said that it was in this meeting that the decision to extend Praveen Sood's tenure for another year was taken.
- In a major step towards transforming vocational education in the country, the Union Cabinet, chaired by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, has approved the upgradation of Technical Training Institutes (ITIs) and setting up of five National Skill Development Centres with financial assistance from the Central Government.
- As announced in the Budget 2024-25, the upgradation of National Technical Training Institutes (ITIs) and setting up of five National Skill Development Centres of Excellence will be implemented with financial assistance from the Central Government.
- As announced in the Budget 2024-25 and Budget 2025-26, an amount of Rs. 60,000 crore has been allocated for this. Out of which, the Central Government contribution is Rs. 30,000 crore, the State Government contribution is Rs. 20,000 crore and the Industry contribution is Rs. 10,000 crore. The scheme will focus on upgrading 1,000 government ITIs.
- It aims to transform existing ITIs into government-owned, industry-managed skill development institutions in collaboration with state governments and industry. Over a period of five years, 20 lakh youth will be skilled.
- The Union Cabinet, chaired by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, today approved expansion of academic and infrastructure capacity of five newly established Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) namely IIT Tirupati (Andhra Pradesh), IIT Palakkad (Kerala), IIT Bhilai (Chhattisgarh), IIT Jammu (Jammu and Kashmir) and IIT Dharwad (Karnataka).
- The total cost of this is Rs 11,828.79 crore for the four years from 2025-26 to 2028-29. The Cabinet has approved the creation of 130 faculty posts in these IITs.
- Five new state-of-the-art research parks are to be set up to strengthen the industry-academia linkage. The student population in these IITs will be increased by more than 6,500 in the next four years.
- This will include 1,364 students in the first year, 1,738 in the second year, 1,767 in the third year and 1,707 in the fourth year.
- Once the new construction work is completed, the current student population of 7,111 in these five IITs will increase to 13,687. This means that 6,576 additional students will be admitted. This will increase the total number of seats.
- The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, has approved the proposal to provide fresh coal connections to Central/State thermal power projects and private power generating companies.
- Two options have been proposed under the revised Power Policy, namely coal connection to Central/State power generating companies at notified price and coal connection to all power generating companies at premium over notified price.
- Guidelines have been issued to Coal Corporation of India and Singareni Coal Corporation to implement these decisions. The revised Power Policy will be communicated to the concerned ministries and all the states for wide dissemination to the concerned departments, institutions and regulatory authorities.
- There will be no additional cost to the coal generating companies due to the revised policy. This policy will benefit thermal power plants, railways, Coal Corporation of India, Singareni Coal Corporation, end-users and state governments.
- Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi today (07.05.2025) addressed the Global Conference on Space Exploration (GLEX-2025) via video conferencing. Welcoming eminent delegates, scientists and astronauts from across the world, he highlighted India's notable space missions.
