6th medal for India in Olympics
  • India's Aman Sherawat lost to Rei Higuchi in the men's 57kg semi-final at the Olympic Wrestling Championships. The bronze medal match was held on Friday.

Wearing hijab is not prohibited in colleges - Supreme Court sensational verdict
  • NG in Chembur, Maharashtra State. Acharya and T.K. Maratha College is functioning. On May 1st, Muslim students wearing hijab were not allowed to enter the college and were stopped at the door. Due to this, there was a stir in the college. 
  • After that, when the police questioned the principal of the college, they said, 'The dress code has been changed in this college so that students can wear clothes that reflect religious symbols. Therefore, it is forbidden for Muslim girls to wear hijab to come to college.
  • Also, N.G. Acharya and T.K. An announcement to this effect was made in an official WhatsApp group of Maratha college teachers and students.
  • Against this decision of the college, the Bombay High Court heard a petition filed by Muslim students and ruled that 'the college administration has taken this step to enforce a uniform dress code and maintain discipline among the students and it cannot be considered as deprivation of fundamental rights'.
  • Following this, the case filed by the students challenging the decision of the Bombay High Court came up for hearing today before a bench of Justices Sanjeev Khanna and Sanjay Kumar. 
  • Then the judges said, 'Bottu, can you tell me not to put tilak? Can it be banned? Can religion be found in the name itself? Would you call the numbers instead? Girl students should have the freedom to choose what they wear, the college cannot force them. It is unfortunate that you suddenly wake up to the fact that there are many religions in the country.
  • They ordered to suspend the order of Mumbai College which banned the wearing of hijab saying that all the students should be given a way to study together without religious discrimination. 
  • However, the Supreme Court has said that women cannot be allowed to wear hijab inside classrooms and religious events cannot be allowed on campus.
Union Cabinet approves amendment to Prime Minister's G-One Yojana
  • The Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi approved the revised Prime Minister's G-One Yojana to cater to the recent growth in the biofuel sector and attract more investments.
  • The revised plan has been approved to extend the timeline for implementation of the plan by five years i.e. up to 2028-29. This includes advanced biofuels produced from lignocellulosic feedstocks. 
  • That is, the project is a source of agricultural, forestry residues, industrial wastes, synthesis gas, algae etc. "Bolt on" plants, "brownfield projects" will now be eligible to use their experience and improve their reliability.
Union Cabinet approves second phase of Prime Minister's Urban Housing Scheme
  • The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi approved the second phase of Prime Minister's Urban Housing Scheme. According to this, financial assistance will be provided to 1 crore urban poor and middle class families through the states and union territories to build or buy affordable houses in urban areas in 5 years. Under this scheme Rs. 2.30 lakh crore government assistance will be provided.
  • The Prime Minister's Urban Housing Scheme is one of the major pilot schemes implemented by the Central Government to provide all-weather sustainable housing to all eligible beneficiaries in urban areas.
Union Cabinet approves implementation of Prime Minister's Rural Housing Scheme
  • The Union Cabinet meeting chaired by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has approved the proposal of the Department of Rural Development to implement the Prime Minister's Rural Housing Scheme from the financial year 2024-25 to 2028-29. According to this, construction of two crore more houses will be financed.
  • The total allocation for the financial year 2024-25 to 2028-29 is Rs 3,06,137 crore. In this, the Central Government's share will be Rs 2,05,856 crore and the State Government's contribution will be Rs 1,00,281 crore.
  • Update of Awas+ list to identify eligible rural households using modified exclusion criteria.
  • The amount of assistance to the beneficiaries will continue at the existing rates of Rs.1.20 lakh in the plains and Rs.1.30 lakh in the North-East Zone / Hill States.
  • 2% of the plan funds as administrative funds 1.70% to be released to the States / Union Territories and 0.30% to be retained at the Central level.
Union Cabinet approves Clean Plants Scheme under Integrated Horticulture Development Initiative
  • Prime Minister Mr. The Union Cabinet chaired by Narendra Modi today approved the Clean Plant Scheme proposed by the Union Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare.
  • With a substantial investment of Rs 1,765.67 crore, this pioneering initiative is expected to revolutionize the horticulture sector in India and set new standards for excellence and sustainability. This was announced in the Finance Minister's Budget speech in February 2023.
  • This will provide access to virus-free, high-quality planting material. This will lead to crop yields and improved income opportunities.
  • Streamlined certification processes and infrastructural support will enable nurseries to effectively propagate clean planting material and promote growth and sustainability.
Union Cabinet approves eight new route projects in Indian Railways
  • Prime Minister Mr. A meeting of the Union Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs chaired by Narendra Modi approved eight projects of the Ministry of Railways with a total estimate of Rs 24,657 crore (approx.).
  • The new route proposals will provide direct connectivity, improve mobility and improve efficiency and service reliability for Indian Railways. These projects are in line with Narendra Modi's vision of a New India. 
  • This will make the people of the region "self-reliant" and create extensive development in the region and improve their employment / self-employment opportunities.
  • These projects are a result of the Prime Minister's Rapid Power National Plan. These are made possible through integrated planning. Provides seamless connectivity for movement of people, goods and services.
