Renaming of two important halls of the President's House
- The President's House is the office and residence of the President, a symbol of the nation and a precious heritage of the people. Efforts are being made to make it accessible to people. The Presidential Palace should reflect Indian cultural values and ethos.
- Accordingly, the two important halls of the President's House namely 'Durbar Hall' and 'Ashok Hall' were renamed as 'Ganathandra Mandapam' and 'Ashok Mandapam' respectively by President Draupathi Murmu.
- The ballistic missile with a range of 5000 km was test-fired yesterday (July 24) by LC-IV from Chandipur, Odisha at 4.20 pm. The missile is indigenously manufactured.
- The Ministry of Defense has described the ballistic missile as a complete network-centric warfare weapon with long-range sensors, a communication system capable of short-term communication, and the ability to intercept and attack other missiles. This missile can be deployed on land and water and can attack targets.
- A 9-judge bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud of the Supreme Court heard the case filed by the Central Government and mining companies against the state governments' rights over mineral resources.
- The Supreme Court ruled in this case today (July 25). In this, 8 judges including the Chief Justice gave a unanimous verdict. Only Justice PV Nagaratna gave a different verdict.
- Delivering the judgment this morning, Chief Justice Chandrachud said, 'The Parliament's Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act, 1957 does not define taxation of lands comprising mines and quarries.
- Under Article 246 of the Constitution the State Legislatures are vested with the power to levy taxes on mines and quarries. Mineral rich lands are included in the description of 'Lands'.
- By the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act, the State Governments cannot restrict the taxation of mines and quarries which may fall within their jurisdiction. The royalty paid to the government by the lessee of the mines is not a tax. It is lease money' he said.
- In the judgment given by Justice Nagaratna, he said, 'States have no right to levy taxes on land containing mines and minerals'.
