- 1860ம் ஆண்டு 50 லட்சம் ரூபாயில் கமாண்டர் டைலர் (Commander Taylor) என்பவரால் உருவாக்கப்பட்ட மகத்தான திட்டம் இது.
- அதன்பிறகு 1955-ல் தமிழ்நாட்டின் சிறந்த நிபுணர் டாக்டர் ஏ. இராமசாமி முதலியார் குழு, 1963-ல் நடைபெற்ற மத்திய அமைச்சரவைக் கூட்டம், 1964-ல் அமைக்கப்பட்ட டாக்டர் நாகேந்திரசிங் ஐ.சி.எஸ் தலைமையிலான உயர்நிலைக்குழு ஆகிய பொறியியல் வல்லுநர்களால் பல்வேறு ஆண்டு காலம் ஆராய்ந்து வடிவமைக்கப்பட்டதுதான் சேது சமுத்திரத் திட்டம் ஆகும்.
- இதன் வழித்தடங்கள் ஆய்வு செய்யப்பட்டு, சுற்றுச்சூழல் பாதிக்கப்படாத வகையில் பணிகளை மேற்கொள்ள திட்ட அறிக்கைகள் தயாரிக்கப்பட்டன.
- தேசிய ஜனநாயக கூட்டணி ஆட்சியின் போது பிரதமராக இருந்த அடல் பிகாரி வாஜ்பாய் அவர்கள் "Feasibility Study"-க்கு அனுமதியளித்தார்கள்.
- அப்போதுதான் சேதுசமுத்திரத் திட்டத்தின் வழித்தடம் எது என்பதும் இறுதி செய்யப்பட்டது. பின்னர் மத்தியில் காங்கிரஸ் தலைமையிலான கூட்டணி அரசு பொறுப்பேற்றது.
- திராவிட முன்னேற்றக் கழகம் பங்கேற்றிருந்த ஐக்கிய முற்போக்குக் கூட்டணி அரசின் பிரதமரான மன்மோகன்சிங்கால் 2004ம் ஆண்டு ரூ.2,427 கோடி மதிப்பீட்டில் இத்திட்டம் அனுமதிக்கப்பட்டது.
- முன்னாள் முதல்வர் கருணாநிதி, காங்கிரஸ் தலைவராக இருந்த சோனியா காந்தி முன்னிலை வகிக்க இத்திட்டத்தை பிரதமர் மன்மோகன்சிங் 2.7.2005 அன்று துவக்கி வைத்தார்கள்.
- திட்டப் பணிகள் நடைபெற்றுக் கொண்டிருந்த நேரத்தில், தமிழ்நாட்டின் பொருளாதாரத்தை தலைநிமிர வைக்கும் இத்திட்டத்துக்கு, குறிப்பாக தென் மாவட்டங்களை செழிக்க வைக்கும் இத்திட்டத்துக்கு, தமிழ்நாட்டு இளைஞர்களின் வேலைவாய்ப்பிற்கு உத்தரவாதம் அளிக்கும் இந்த சேது சமுத்திரத் திட்டத்துக்கு முட்டுக்கட்டை போடப்பட்டது.
- This is a grand project developed by Commander Taylor in 1860 at a cost of 50 lakh rupees. After that in 1955 Tamil Nadu's best expert Dr. A. The Sethu Samudra Project was studied and designed over several years by the Ramasamy Mudaliar Committee, the Union Cabinet meeting held in 1963, and the high-level committee headed by Dr. Nagendrasingh ICS in 1964.
- Its routes were studied and project reports were prepared to carry out the work in an environment-friendly manner.
- Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who was the Prime Minister during the NDA regime, approved the "Feasibility Study".
- It was then that the route of the Setusamudra project was finalized. Later, the Congress-led coalition government took charge at the centre.
- The project was sanctioned at an estimate of Rs 2,427 crore in 2004 by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh of the United Progressive Alliance government in which the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam participated.
- Prime Minister Manmohan Singh launched this scheme on 2.7.2005 with former Chief Minister Karunanidhi and former Congress President Sonia Gandhi leading the way.
- While the project was going on, the Sethu Samudra project, which would have boosted the economy of Tamil Nadu, especially the southern districts, and guaranteed employment to the youth of Tamil Nadu, was stalled.
