French bread with UNESCO heritage status
  • UNESCO is an international organization that aims to promote peace and cooperation among nations through education, art, science and culture. Currently baguette bread has been selected as one of the world heritage foods. Baguette is a type of bread made by mixing flour, water, salt and yeast.
  • It is a staple food in France. It was invented in 1839 by August Zhang, a baker and entrepreneur from Vienna. He introduced the world to the taste of soft bread using a steam oven. It got the official name 'Bagette' in 1920.
  • The 400 bakeries that made and sold this bread were operating at a loss due to a decline in baguette sales. As a result, these were closed little by little from 1970 onwards. Local bakeries were affected by the proliferation of supermarkets in France.
  • As more and more city dwellers began to eat pizza and burgers, baguette bread was forgotten over time. To change this situation, the French government made a request to add baguette bread to UNESCO's list of cultural heritage foods at the beginning of 2021. That request has now been accepted.
