Independent India's first voter Shyam Nehi passed away at the age of 106

  • After the independence of our country, general elections were held for the first time in early 1952. Elections were held in Himachal state at the end of 1951, a few months earlier due to bad weather like fog and heavy rain.
  • Shyam Charan Nehi is credited with casting the first vote. He was 34 when he played his first hole in Kalpa, Himachal's Kinnavur district.
  • Nehi has done his democratic duty without fail in all Lok Sabha, Assembly and Panchayat elections since then. So far he has voted in 34 elections. Subsequently, Nehi was also appointed as the publicity officer of the Election Commission.
  • In this case, Nehi, who was ill for the past few days, died yesterday due to old age. The district administration has announced that his body will be cremated with full state honours.
  • The Climate Change Conference is set to begin on Sunday. The 27th UN General Assembly will be held from November 6 to November 8 in Sham-Al-Sheikh, Egypt. A climate change conference is about to take place. 198 countries are participating in this annual conference.
  • It will be discussed how to fight climate change together. More than 100 leaders including US President Joe Biden and British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak are going to participate in this conference.
  • However, Union Environment Minister Bhupent Yadav is going to lead the team that will participate on behalf of India in the conference. A press release issued by the Union Ministry of Environment said that the conference will again call upon all countries to join the 'eco-friendly lifestyle' movement.
