Essentials to help the people of Sri Lanka - Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Stalin flagged and sent

  • Chief Minister Stalin announced in the Tamil Nadu Assembly that essential items would be sent to help the people of Sri Lanka at the Chennai port. 
  • In the first phase of the event, the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu handed over 9000 metric tons of rice, 200 metric tons of spirit powder and 24 metric tons of essential medicines. Stalin flagged off the cargo ship to Sri Lanka today (May 18).
Indian economy may see a decline - S&P forecast
  • Earlier, the research firm had forecast that India's economic growth rate would be 7.8 per cent in the current financial year. It is currently down 7.3 percent. This is expected to have an impact on growth, as inflation is at its peak in the country.
Junior World Cup Sniper Series 2022
  • In Germany, the Junior World Cup sniper series takes place. In the men's 25m, 'Rapid Fire Pistol' category, the Indian team won 17-1 to clinch the gold medal. This is the 12th gold for India in the series.
  • Vijayveer Sidhu and Simranpreet Kaur's India '1 'team defeated Anish and Tejaswani's' 2's'' 2 'team team to win the gold medal in the 25m' Rapid Fire Pistol 'category final.

  • The Women's World Boxing Championship Series is taking place in Turkey. More than 400 athletes from 93 countries are participating.
  • Manisha of India met Irma Testa of Italy in the semifinals of the 57 kg category. Manisha lost the match 0-5 and won the bronze medal. In the next 63 kg semifinals, India's Parveen Hooda lost 1-4 to Ireland's Sarah Ami to win the bronze medal.
India's first government OTT site in Kerala
  • Kerala State Film Development Corporation has launched a new OTT platform at Chaab. Kerala Ministry of Culture Saji Serian has announced the name of the OTT site 'C Space'.
  • The ODT platform will be operational from November 1, the day Kerala State was formed. It is also the first ODT platform to be launched in India by the government.
Warship shipwreck missile naval test success
  • The missile, which was fired from a combat helicopter, reportedly went to the designated location and shot down the target accurately. 
  • The test was conducted in the sea near Balasore, Odisha, by the Indian Navy in association with the Military Research and Development Organization (DRDO).
  • It is noteworthy that this is the first missile in the country to be built domestically to destroy warships.
Additional power to sell shares to PSUs, decision to close subsidiaries - Cabinet approval
  • The Union Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Modi was held in Delhi. In this, the PSUs were given additional power to decide whether to close its branches or divisions or sell their shares to its board of directors.
  • Under current rules, the board of directors of public sector companies has only the power to make joint ventures, co-ordinate and acquire subsidiaries through the share capital of the respective companies.
  • Sale of shares, no power to close subsidiaries. Currently, following the approval of the Union Cabinet, the decision to sell the shares may be taken by the PSU. This will speed up the decision making process.
Delhi Deputy Governor Anil Baijal resigns
  • In Delhi, the Aam Aadmi Party, led by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, is in power. Anil Baijal, a retired IAS officer, was appointed Deputy Governor of Delhi in 2016.
  • During his tenure, there were clashes between him and the ruling Aam Aadmi Party government in Delhi over various issues. In this situation, Anil Baijal resigned from the post of Governor and sent a letter to President Ramnath Govind.
  • Perarivalan, who was jailed for 31 years in the Rajiv Gandhi murder case, has been released by the Supreme Court. Former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated by a grenade during an election campaign rally on May 21, 1991 in Sriperumbudur, next to Chennai. 
  • Twenty-five people, including Perarivalan, Nalini and Murugan, were arrested in connection with the incident. Perarivalan was accused of buying a battery for the bomb. The lower court sentenced everyone involved in the case to death. They appealed to the Supreme Court.
  • In 1999, nine people were acquitted by the Supreme Court. The death sentences were upheld for Perarivalan, Nalini, Murugan and Chandan. Ravichandran, Jayakumar and Robert Pius were reduced to life imprisonment.
  • The bench comprising Justices L. Nageswara Rao, B. R. Kawai and A. S. Bopanna delivered the judgment in this sensational case. We are releasing Perarivalan directly using Section 142, the personal power of the Supreme Court. This order must be accepted and Perarivalan released immediately.
The Union Cabinet, headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved amendments to the National Policy on Biofuels 2018
  • Various decisions were taken at the National Biofuels Coordinating Committee to increase biofuel production due to advances in the biofuel sector.
  • As per the recommendation of the Standing Committee, it has been decided to introduce 20 per cent ethanol blended petrol from 01.04.2023 across the country. To this end, amendments have been made to the National Policy on Biofuels
  • Allowing stocks of additional raw materials for biofuel production
  • Changing the target of 20% ethanol blending in petrol from 2030 to 2025-26 in the current financial year.
  • Increasing biofuel production in the country under the Production Plan in India in Special Economic Zones and Export-Based Sectors
  • Adding new members to the National Biofuels Coordinating Committee
  • Important amendments approved in the National Policy on Biofuels are such as allowing export of biofuels in certain categories.
  • The availability of more raw materials for biofuel production will enhance defense India. It will also inspire the Prime Minister's vision to transform India into an energy-free country by 2047
