Supreme Court grants bail to Perarivalan
  • Former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated in 1991 in Perumbavoor next to Chennai. In this case, Nalini, Murugan, Chandan and Perarivalan were sentenced to death and Jayakumar, Robert Pius and Ravichandran were sentenced to life imprisonment.
  • In April 2000, the Governor of Tamil Nadu used his power to reduce Nalini's death sentence to life imprisonment. Similarly, in 2014, the Supreme Court reduced the death sentence of Murugan, Chandan and Perarivalan to life imprisonment.
  • In this context, Perarivalan had filed a case in the Supreme Court in 2016 seeking stay of his sentence and release as the charge against him in connection with the belt bomb blast in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case has not been proved.
  • In this context, the case, which was pending before the Supreme Court, came up for hearing again in a session of the apex court comprising Justices L Nageswara Rao and BR Kawai.
  • Additional Solicitor General of the Union Government KM Nataraj strongly objected to this, saying, “There are huge conspiracies behind the assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, such as weapons, bombs and foreign links.
  • The death sentence already imposed on Perarivalan has been reduced to life imprisonment. Can't show concern by granting bail again.
  • The matter has been pending for a long time. The Coast has to examine whether the Governor of Tamil Nadu has the power to decide in this matter and what his authority is. The man, who has served 32 years in prison, is seeking bail.
  • Therefore, we are using the power of the Supreme Court to grant bail to Perarivalan till the decision of the Central Government in this regard. We stipulate that he must sign at the police station in Jolarpet once a month. The results of this case are subject to the final conclusion of the main case.
