Venkatraman appointed new director of Indira Gandhi Atomic Research Center

  • Arunkumar Bhaduri, who was the director of the Indira Gandhi Atomic Research Center in Kalpakkam, Chengalpattu district, has retired and P. Venkatraman, who has been working as a senior scientist, has been appointed as the new director.
  • In 2007, he received the Homi Baba Science and Technology Award, the highest award of the Indian Atomic Research Department. He has also received prizes for the achievement team. Various research papers written by him have also won awards for best essay.
Terrorism should not be supported in Afghanistan - UN resolution passed
  • The United States, France and Britain presented a resolution on Afghanistan at a UN Security Council meeting chaired by India. Thirteen of the 15 member states voted in favor of the resolution.
  • The resolution was subsequently declared passed. The resolution states: The Taliban should not use the Afghan region to threaten or attack other countries. Afghanistan should not be used for asylum, training, planning or fundraising for terrorists.
UN calls for extension of 3 Disasters Approved by the Security Council
  • UN India assumes the presidency of the Security Council for the month of August. India held important meetings on maritime security, peacekeeping and counter-terrorism. The last meeting chaired by India was held.
  • The meeting was chaired by Foreign Secretary Hashwathan Shringla. The resolution was passed at the meeting on the Afghanistan issue. In addition, the extension of 3 major issues was also approved at the meeting.
  • UN Security Council calls for immediate end to hostilities in Lebanon The meeting approved a resolution to suspend the peacekeeping force for another year. There are 862 Indian soldiers serving in the peacekeeping force in the country.
  • Permission was granted to extend the travel ban imposed on those who are obstructing the peaceful environment in the African country of Mali and the move to freeze their assets until August 31, 2022. 
  • UN Security Council calls on Somalia to suspend uranium enrichment The decision to extend the support until May 31 next year was approved at the meeting.
GDP - 20.1% increase in the first quarter
  • It had a negative growth of 24.4 per cent in the first quarter of last fiscal, while the first quarter of the current fiscal has witnessed tremendous growth. According to data released by the Federal Department of Economics and Statistics, the country's GDP grew by 20.1 percent in the first quarter of April-June 2021-22.

Sniper - Bronze winner Singraj Adana
  • At the Tokyo Paralympics, India's Singraj Adana (39) won the bronze medal in the Ada (P1) 10m A Pistol SH1. Ava has won a medal in her first Paralympic Games. This is India's 2nd medal in sniper at the Tokyo Paralympics.

Indian Navy's first joint exercise with Algeria
  • The INS Tabar, which is sailing to Europe and Africa in good faith, participated in a maritime joint exercise with the Algerian naval vessel 'Estzer' on 29 August.

Garbage generating project - Sivagangai
  • Kanjirangal Panchayat in Sivagangai district of Tamil Nadu is implementing a project to generate wealth from waste.
  • Garbage is collected from all over the village and electricity is generated from it. It is used for street lighting and other needs of the village. The rest of the products in the power plant are sold as disinfectants.
Mariappan won silver in the Paralympic high jump, bronze for Sarathkumar
  • In the finals of the D42 division, Sam Grevy of the United States won gold over 1.88m, Mariappan won silver over 1.86m and Sarath Kumar won bronze over 1.83m. Another Indian, Varun Singh Patti, who competed in the event, finished 7th with a height of 1.77 meters. Notably, Eva won bronze at the Rio Paralympics.
