New rules for Jallikattu - 5 key features of the Chennai High Court judgment
  • Seshan, a resident of Chennai, had filed a petition in the Chennai High Court. He had stated in his petition that the breed of cows was becoming extinct as the country cows were not bred for this purpose.
  • The government should provide subsidies and incentives to Jallikattu cattle breeders and farmers to raise cattle.
  • It is a pity that the number of country cows reared in the villages is declining drastically.
  • Veterinarians must confirm that the cows are 'country cows' before they can participate in javelin throwing competitions. Any veterinarian who certifies crossbred cows as 'country cows' can be prosecuted for contempt of court.
  • The government should abandon artificial insemination of cows as much as possible. It could be a crime under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act of 1960.
  • The reason for enacting the law in 2017 for jallikkattu competitions is to protect the native cow breeds like Puliyankulam, Umbalacheri, Malaimadu and Kangayam.
  • The court accepted that the petitioner had stated that it was difficult to catch foreign cows and crossbred cows as the thimble was not large.
