Rs 100 crore urban wage employment scheme in Tamil Nadu

  • Millions of people in rural areas are benefiting from the central government's Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme. In this context, in order to uplift the livelihood of the urban poor, the Government of Tamil Nadu has announced an 'Urban Wage Employment Scheme'.
  • This includes the construction of parks, playgrounds, drains, roads, buildings, maintenance and renovation of water bodies. Rs 100 crore has been earmarked for the pilot project.
  • Currently, the scheme will be implemented in 2 zones of Chennai Corporation, one zone each in other corporations, 7 municipalities and 37 municipalities. The Government of Tamil Nadu has now given permission to all District Collectors to implement this scheme.
  • For this scheme, which is fully funded by the Government of Tamil Nadu, job seekers in each family are to be registered and issued an employee card. Women will be offered at least 50 percent of the work. Everyone will be paid the same based on their work. A grievance system for employees will also be developed.
Decision to purchase C-295 aircraft for the Air Force
  • The Avro-748 aircraft used in the Indian Air Force has come to a complete halt due to obsolescence. Following this, the government has decided to purchase C-295 aircraft from Airbus.
  • Under the agreement, Airbus will manufacture and deliver 16 aircraft to Seville, Spain. The remaining 40 aircraft will be manufactured and delivered in India. In India, Airbus has entered into an agreement with Tata Advanced Systems (DASL).
  • In India, Airbus Defense and Tata Advanced Systems have agreed to jointly manufacture and supply aircraft.
Conference attended by the leaders of the four countries
  • The United States, India, Australia and Japan formed the Quad Alliance in 2007. In 2017, Australia joined the organization.
