Anti-Submarine Warfare Vessel 'Amini' Handed Over to the Indian Navy
- 'Amini,' an anti-submarine warfare (ASW) shallow-water craft indigenously designed and built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) in Kolkata was formally handed over to the Indian Navy on November 5, 2026.
- The vessel has been designed and constructed in compliance with the classification rules of the Indian Register of Shipping. As one of the largest waterjet-propelled vessels in the Indian Navy, 'Amini' is equipped with state-of-the-art lightweight torpedoes, indigenous rocket launchers, and advanced sonar systems.
- Capable of precisely detecting and neutralizing underwater threats, the vessel will significantly bolster the Navy’s anti-submarine warfare capabilities, coastal surveillance, and mine-laying operations.
- The vessel is named after Amini Island in the Union Territory of Lakshadweep. The name has been revived to honor the legacy of the former INS Amini, which was decommissioned in 2002.
- With over 80 percent of its components sourced indigenously, 'Amini' contributes to reducing reliance on imports, strengthens the nation’s defense manufacturing capacity, and aligns with the Central Government’s vision of an 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' (Self-Reliant India).
