Union Cabinet Approves National Integrated Biogas Programme ‘GOBARdhan’
- The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, has approved the National Circular Bio-energy Programme (GOBARdhan) with a financial outlay of ₹23,731 crore. This scheme marks a significant milestone in the country's clean energy journey.
- It paves the way for converting agricultural waste, cattle dung, and urban waste into clean fuel, organic fertilizer, and sources of rural income.
- Scheduled for implementation from the 2026-27 to 2035-36 financial years, this programme will establish biogas production as a key pillar of the nation's future energy infrastructure.
- Administered by the Union Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, the scheme aims to increase domestic production tenfold.
- The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, approved the four-laning of the 135.871 km Guwahati-Tezpur section of National Highway 15 in Assam today. The project will be executed at a total capital cost of ₹8,970.20 crore.
- As part of the project, an emergency landing facility (4.9 km) will be constructed on the Tezpur bypass in collaboration with the Indian Air Force. This initiative will help alleviate traffic congestion on NH-27 (East-West Corridor) located south of the Brahmaputra River.
- The project includes the construction of five major bypasses spanning a total distance of 58.7 km. This will alleviate traffic congestion on roads passing through densely populated areas such as Baihata Chariali, Sipajhar, Kharupetia, Dhekiajuli, and Tezpur.
- Additionally, 15 major bridges, 30 minor bridges, 19 flyovers, and one elephant underpass (on the Tezpur bypass) are set to be constructed.
