Vikram Solar Signs MoU with Tamil Nadu Government for ₹15,037 Crore Investment
- An MoU was signed today (July 9) at the Secretariat—in the presence of Chief Minister Joseph Vijay and at an event organized by the Department of Industries, Investment Promotion and Commerce for the establishment of a Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) manufacturing plant by Vikram Solar.
- The project, to be located at the SIPCOT Industrial Park in Gangaikondan, Tirunelveli district, entails an investment of ₹15,037 crore and is set to provide employment to 2,670 people.
- The Vikram Solar Group has already established Solar PV module manufacturing plants at two locations in Tamil Nadu: Oragadam and Vallam. Additionally, it has set up an integrated manufacturing complex for solar PV cells and modules in Gangaikondan, Tirunelveli district.
- At the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board headquarters in Chennai, and under the guidance of Chief Minister Joseph Vijay, an MoU was signed between the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB Ltd) and the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras).
- The agreement was signed in the presence of C.T.R. Nirmal Kumar, the State Minister for Energy and Law. The initiative aims to technically strengthen Tamil Nadu's power infrastructure, enhance renewable energy integration, and improve the reliability, efficiency, and quality of electricity services.
- The MoU was exchanged between Dr. J. Radhakrishnan, Chairman of the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board, and Manu Santhanam, Dean of Industrial Consultancy and Sponsored Research at IIT Madras.
- This Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at modernizing the state's power sector to global standards paves the way for long-term collaboration in introducing innovative technologies across power generation, transmission, distribution, and green energy sectors.
- It facilitates infrastructure upgrades, efficiency improvements, cost optimization, technical expert audits, and research and development, while also implementing Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), data analytics, digital technologies, and data-driven decision-making processes.
- The 29th meeting of the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) was held today (09.07.2026) at the Central Academy for State Forest Service (CASFOS) in Coimbatore. Mr. Bhupender Yadav, Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change and Chairperson of the NTCA, presided over the meeting.
- Members of Parliament Mr. Rajiv Pratap Rudy and Mr. Harish Chandra Meena, along with other Authority members, senior ministry officials, Chief Wildlife Wardens from tiger-bearing states, and Field Directors of tiger reserves, participated in the meeting.
- Discussions during the meeting focused on key policy, management, and institutional issues regarding tiger conservation and wildlife management in the country. The deliberations centered on strengthening protection, improving management practices, and enhancing conservation measures within India's tiger habitats.
- The Commission reviewed the implementation of decisions taken at the previous meeting and considered proposals aimed at further strengthening the protection of tiger habitats.
- At the invitation of Australian Prime Minister Mr. Anthony Albanese, Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi visited Australia from July 8 to 10, 2026. He participated in the 3rd India-Australia Annual Summit in Melbourne.
- During the summit, the two leaders recalled the long-standing friendship between the nations, rooted in historical ties, people-to-people connections, shared strategic interests, and mutual respect.
- They reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthening and expanding the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between India and Australia, exploring new avenues of cooperation that benefit regional peace, prosperity, and stability, and addressing challenges arising in the rapidly evolving global landscape.
- The Prime Ministers affirmed that defense and security cooperation forms the foundation of the partnership between the two nations. To this end, they announced a joint commitment to defense and security cooperation.
