Supreme Court Collegium Approves Appointment of 19 New Judges to Madras High Court
- In an effort to address the prevailing shortage of judges in the High Court, the Supreme Court Collegium has recommended to the Central Government the appointment of a total of 19 new judges, comprising 9 advocates and 10 judicial officers.
- Out of the sanctioned strength of 75 judges' posts in the Madras High Court, 23 positions currently remain vacant. To fill these vacancies, the names of nine individuals—including S. Alli (the Registrar General of the Madras High Court, holding the rank of a District Judge) and District Judges Murugan, Sumathi, Thirumagal Chandrasekar, Dharmalingam Lingeswaran, Karthikeyan Balathandayutham, Shanmugam Karthikeyan, Balusamy Murugesan, and Gunasekaran—had been proposed.
- Similarly, the names of ten advocates—N. Ramesh, G.K. Muthukumar, Rajesh Vivekanandan, Sankaranarayanan Ravikumar, Nagarajan Dileepkumar, E. Manoharan, Krishnasamy Govindarajan, Rajinish Pathiyil, K. Appadurai, and R. Anita—had also been recommended.
- Against this backdrop, a meeting of the Supreme Court Collegium was held yesterday. During this meeting, the Collegium granted its approval to the recommendations regarding the 19 individuals proposed for appointment as judges to the Madras High Court.
- As the next step, should the Central Government accord its approval to these appointments, it is expected that the President of India will issue the formal orders regarding the appointment of these new judges.
