Himanta Biswa Sarma Sworn in as Assam Chief Minister
- In the recently concluded Assam Legislative Assembly elections, the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) secured a resounding victory, winning 101 out of the total 126 seats.
- With this outcome securing a two-thirds majority the alliance has retained power for a third consecutive term. Following this, during a meeting of NDA MLAs held in Guwahati the day before yesterday, Himanta Biswa Sarma was elected as the leader of the legislative party.
- Consequently, Himanta Biswa Sarma was sworn in today as Chief Minister for his second term. Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya administered the oath of office and the oath of secrecy to him.
- Along with him, four others were sworn in as ministers: Rameshwar Teli and Ajanta Neog from the BJP; Atul Bora from the Asom Gana Parishad; and Saran Bora from the Bodoland People's Front.
- The swearing-in ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, BJP National President Nitin Nabin, as well as Chief Ministers and Deputy Chief Ministers from various states, among others.
- The value of the Indian Rupee witnessed a sharp decline of 35 paise in a single day today (May 12), hitting a historic low of ₹95.63 against the US Dollar. Investors fear that this continuous depreciation of the currency could drive up the prices of imported goods and exacerbate inflation.
- Experts are closely monitoring the effectiveness of the measures being undertaken by the Central Government and the Reserve Bank of India to stem the decline in the Rupee's value.
