Forest Minister Rajakannappan inaugurates India's first Dewangu sanctuary in Dindigul
- The Tamil Nadu government has set up a state-of-the-art conservation center at an estimated cost of Rs 16.5 crore in Aiyalur, Dindigul district, to protect the rare species known as 'Dewangu'. Tamil Nadu Forest Minister R.S. Rajakannappan inaugurated the center.
- The center is a historic milestone in the conservation of this small mammal species that spends its life in trees and eats insects.
- At the event, a dedicated website and a mobile app were also launched to create awareness about Dewangu. Through this, the public and researchers can get live information about Dewangu conservation.
- The center will not only function as a museum, but also as a living laboratory. An information center and a visitor center have been set up to help students learn about the lifestyle and ecology of Dewangu.
- While the election was scheduled to be held on March 16, it has now been officially announced that all 6 candidates have been elected unopposed. The announcement was made by Returning Officer Shanthi at the Secretariat in the afternoon.
- Based on the strength of the members in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, 6 candidates, 3 each, were fielded by the DMK alliance and the AIADMK alliance.
- On behalf of the AIADMK & allied parties, Thambidurai (AIADMK), Anbumani Ramadoss (PMK), L.K. Sudheesh (DMDK) and on behalf of the DMK & allied parties, 6 candidates were contesting: Trichy Siva (DMK), Constantine Ravindran (DMK), Christopher Thilak (Congress).
- A total of 12 candidates had filed nominations for this election. However, only the petitions of the above 6 people from the main parties were valid. The petitions of the other 6 people were rejected as ineligible.
- As the deadline for withdrawal of nominations ended at 3 pm today, all 6 of them were declared "selected unopposed" as there was no one else in the fray. The selected Anbumani Ramadoss, Thambidurai, Sudheesh and Christopher Thilak came in person and received their certificates.
