  • Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi today (17.01.2026) inaugurated several rail and road infrastructure projects worth ₹3,250 crore in Malda, West Bengal, and laid the foundation stone for new projects.
  • The Prime Minister visited Malda Town Railway Station, where he flagged off India's first Vande Bharat sleeper train between Howrah and Guwahati (Kamakhya).
  • The Prime Minister laid the foundation stone for the reconstruction and four-laning of the Dhupguri-Falakata section of National Highway-31D, a crucial road project that will improve road connectivity and facilitate smooth traffic flow in the northern part of West Bengal.
  • The Prime Minister also laid the foundation stone for four key railway projects, including the new railway line between Balurghat and Hili, next-generation railway freight maintenance facilities at New Jalpaiguri, and the modernization of Vande Bharat train maintenance facilities in Jalpaiguri district.
  • The Prime Minister dedicated to the nation the electrified railway lines between New Cooch Behar-Bamanhat and New Cooch Behar-Bakshirhat.
  • Furthermore, the Prime Minister virtually flagged off 4 new Amrit Bharat Express trains. The trains inaugurated by the Prime Minister were New Jalpaiguri-Nagercoil, New Jalpaiguri-Tiruchirappalli, Alipurduar-SMVT Bengaluru, and Alipurduar-Mumbai (Panvel) Amrit Express trains. 
Prime Minister Modi inaugurates Vande Bharat sleeper train
  • Prime Minister Modi today (January 17) flagged off the country's first Vande Bharat sleeper train from Malda Town station in West Bengal, connecting Howrah and Guwahati (Kamakhya).
  • He also virtually inaugurated the Howrah-Guwahati Vande Bharat sleeper train. Additionally, Prime Minister Modi virtually inaugurated four Amrit Bharat Express trains.
  • Designed to meet the growing transportation needs of modern India, this fully air-conditioned Vande Bharat sleeper train will provide passengers with an air travel-like experience at an affordable fare.
