Polished hand axe found in Villupuram
  • Archaeological researchers led by Immanuel conducted a surface field survey in the Thenpennai River at Pidagam Kuchipalayam near Villupuram and discovered an ancient Neolithic stone tool and an iron weapon.
  • During the surface field survey in the Thenpennai River at Pidagam Kuchipalayam, a stone tool belonging to the Neolithic period and a broken iron object were found amidst fragmented black and red pottery shards.
  • The stone tool found in the Thenpennai River is a hand axe from the Neolithic period, measuring 6.5 cm in length. This hand axe is sharp on one side and flat on the other. Made of granite, it has been well-polished and smoothed. The Neolithic period dates from 3000 BC to 1000 BC.
  • Due to the floods in the Thenpennai River, pottery shards of burial urns and black and red pottery shards were found scattered and buried in the soil. In this area, a broken iron weapon measuring 17 cm in length was found on the surface of the earth.
  • In ancient times, it was customary to bury the bodies or bones of the deceased in large earthenware pots called urns. Along with the body of the deceased, the objects they used were also buried next to the urn.
  • In Tamil Nadu, objects such as swords, ornaments, and paddy grains used by the deceased have been found next to the burial urns discovered in places like Adichanallur and Sivakalai.
  • Similarly, the iron weapon found in the Thenpennai river could have surfaced on the earth's surface due to soil erosion, near the fragmented burial urn.
  • Furthermore, archaeological researcher Immanuel states that archaeological evidence dating from the Neolithic period, Megalithic period, Sangam period, and Chola period is continuously being discovered and documented along the banks of the Thenpennai river.
