A thousand-year-old Chola silver coin discovered
  • College students Vinoth Kumar, Deva, Samuel and David Rajkumar were engaged in surface field research in the Thenpennai riverbed of Ulundhampattu near Panrutty. When they cleaned and examined a coin they found, it was confirmed that it was a silver coin from the era of Emperor Rajaraja Chola I.
  • The weight of this coin is about 4.35 grams. It belongs to the era of Emperor Rajaraja Chola, who ruled from 985 to 1,014 AD, said archaeologist Emmanuel. There are many important inscriptions on both sides of this rare silver coin.
  • The word 'Srirajaraja' is inscribed in Devanagari script. A figure is standing holding a flower in his hand, with four circles on his left, a crescent on top and a flower below. On the right side, a trident and a lamp are engraved. A figure is seated holding a conch, and 'Srirajaraja' is written again in Devanagari script near his left hand.
  • So far, only more than 50 copper coins from the Rajaraja Chola period have been found in the surface field surveys of the Thenpennai river area. In this situation, the discovery of a coin made of silver for the first time further confirms its antiquity.
  • It is noteworthy that coins used during the Chera, Chola and Pandya periods have been found from time to time in river basins like Tamiravaruni, Vaigai and Kaveri.
India re-elected to the IMO Governing Council
  • The election for the Governing Council of the International Maritime Organization was held during the executive session held in London. In this election, which was contested by various countries, India received overwhelming support. A total of 169 countries voted in the council election. Out of which, 154 votes were cast in favor of India.
  • India's re-election, supported by a majority of countries, is seen as a recognition of its position and contribution in addressing global maritime challenges. The Ministry of External Affairs has issued a statement on India's re-election to the Council of the International Maritime Organization.
  • As a major player in international maritime trade, India will continue to play a key role in shaping the rules of the maritime industry and enhancing international maritime security through this Council seat.
Fourth indigenously designed Nilgiri-class frigate 'Taragiri' handed over to the Indian Navy
  • The fourth Nilgiri-class frigate (Project 17A), the third frigate "Taragiri" (Yard 12653) built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilding Limited, was handed over to the Indian Navy by the Mumbai-based shipbuilding company on November 28, 2025.
  • This is a sign of India's self-reliance in the design and construction of warships. Under Action Plan 17A, warships are designed to meet current and future challenges in the maritime domain on a multi-role basis.
  • INS Taragiri is a successor to INS Taragiri, a Leander-class warship that was commissioned into the Indian Navy from 16 May 1980 to 27 June 2013. The warship has rendered 33 years of distinguished service to the country.
  • This state-of-the-art naval design is designed to be an advanced warship with features such as stealth, automatic and survivability. It is also a symbol of India's self-reliance in the field of warship construction.
