IIT Bhubaneswar approves setting up of ‘NAMO Semiconductor Lab’
- The Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology, Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw, has recently approved setting up of ‘NAMO Semiconductor Lab’ at IIT Bhubaneswar. The project will be funded under the Members of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme. The estimated cost of the project is Rs. 4.95 crore.
- The NAMO Semiconductor Lab will contribute to India’s deep skill pool by equipping the youth with the skills required by the industry. The lab will position IIT Bhubaneswar as a hub for semiconductor research and skill development.
- The new lab will further promote Make in India and Design in India initiatives. It will act as a driving force for the rapidly growing semiconductor ecosystem in the country.
- India is home to 20 per cent of the global chip design talent. Students from 295 universities across the country are using the latest analytics provided by the industry. The chips designed by 28 students from 20 institutions were fully utilized at SLC Mohali.
- IIT Bhubaneswar already has a Silicon Carbide Research and Innovation Centre (SiCRIC). It will provide research and development facilities to support the semiconductor industry in the country.
- 3 professors from Assam's Gauhati University have been included in the ranking of top 2% scientists in the world published by Stanford University, USA. These include the university's distinguished professor and renowned meteorologist Bhupendra Nath Goswami, professor of chemistry Prodeep Bhugan, and professor of mathematics Bipan Hazarika.
- It has been reported that they have been given this recognition for their sustained research contribution under the category of lifetime research. Stanford University publishes a list of the top 2 percent of researchers worldwide based on factors including publication of research articles, 'H' code for research articles, 'HM' code for co-authorship of research articles, and a composite indicator called C-score every year in the categories of lifetime research and one-year contribution.
- Accordingly, these three have been honored in the ranking list for the year 2025. This highlights the expanding research activities of the country.
- Furthermore, 6,239 researchers have been included in the list of outstanding researchers who have made a one-year contribution to research and 3,372 researchers have been included in the list of long-term research contributions.
