Rs. 1 crore scheme to protect 4 endangered species in Tamil Nadu
- The areas comprising the Western and Eastern Todarchi Hills in Tamil Nadu have been recognized as global biodiversity hotspots. The lion-tailed macaque found in the Western Todarchi Hills, the Chennai porcupine found in the northern regions of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala, the tusker living in the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve, and the hump-headed mahseer living in the Moyaru River have been defined as endangered species.
- The Tamil Nadu government has formulated a new scheme to protect these species and has allocated Rs. 1 crore for it.
- Accordingly, a total of Rs. 1 crore has been allocated for the protection of the lion-tailed macaque, Rs. 48.50 lakh for the Madras porcupine, Rs. 20.50 lakh for the striped tusker, Rs. 14 lakh for the striped tusker, and Rs. 17 lakh for the hump-headed mahseer.
- Through this fund, it is planned to monitor the habitats of these endangered species and conduct research in this regard. Moreover, safe breeding centers are also to be set up for these species in their habitats.
- Apart from this, the capacity of forest department staff will be improved and steps will be taken to improve the important habitats of animals such as rain forests, northern lands, river systems, etc., it has been stated in it.
