“Poor Student Hostels to be known as Social Justice Hostels” - CM M.K. Stalin’s announcement
- To ensure that students from various backward sections of our society can continue their education, school and college hostels are functioning under various government departments across our state.
- 41,194 students are staying in 727 backward welfare hostels functioning under the Backward Classes, Most Backward Classes and Scheduled Castes Department, 26,653 students are staying in 455 Most Backward Classes hostels, 9,372 students are staying in 157 Scheduled Castes hostels and 1,250 students are staying in 20 Minority Welfare Hostels.
- A total of 98,909 students are studying in 1,332 Adi Dravidar hostels and 2,190 students in 48 tribal hostels operating under the Adi Dravidar and Tribal Welfare Department. Thus, a total of 1,79,568 students are benefiting from 2,739 hostels across Tamil Nadu. The Tamil Nadu government has taken various steps in the last four years for the progress of these students.
- Due to various pioneering initiatives such as increasing the cost of food and various steps for these students, improving the infrastructure of hostels, and providing them with special skill training, the learning ability of the students has improved.
- Accordingly, the school and college hostels for poor students operating under various departments will henceforth be known by the common name of ‘Social Justice Hostels’.
- For the first time in the country, the Census will be conducted digitally through a mobile phone app. The census is being conducted through mobile apps in English, Hindi and regional languages. The details recorded in the process will be sent to the Census Commission server.
- For the first time, digital technology will be used to obtain population data. A website has been created for the public to register their details themselves. The census will be conducted in two phases in the country. The census in Tamil Nadu will begin in March 2027.
- The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, today participated in the 17th BRICS Summit to be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on 6-7 July 2025.
- The leaders held constructive discussions on various issues of the BRICS Summit agenda, including global governance reform, addressing the economic demands of developing countries worldwide, peace and security, strengthening multilateralism, development issues, artificial intelligence.
- The Prime Minister thanked the President of Brazil for his warm hospitality and for successfully hosting the Summit. The Prime Minister addressed the opening session on “Global Governance Reform and Peace and Security”.
- Later, the Prime Minister addressed the session on “Strengthening Multilateralism, Economic-Financial Affairs and Artificial Intelligence”. The session was attended by the BRICS Partnership and guest countries. At the conclusion of the session, attended by the leaders, the member countries adopted the ‘Rio de Janeiro Declaration’.
