India’s first Hornbill Conservation Centre at Anaimalai Tiger Reserve
- In a pioneering move to conserve the Hornbill, one of the most ecologically important and attractive birds in the Asian tropics, the Tamil Nadu government has granted administrative approval to establish a Special Centre for Iroquois Conservation at Anaimalai Tiger Reserve (ATR).
- With this new initiative, Tamil Nadu is at the forefront of Iroquois conservation in India. It is also a major step forward in conserving the tropical forest ecosystems of the Western Ghats.
- Hornbill play a vital role in seed dispersal and tree regeneration in tropical forests. However, these bird species face increasing threats due to habitat degradation, deforestation and climate change.
- Recognizing the urgency of conserving these birds, Tamil Nadu is establishing a special centre to address these challenges through scientific research, habitat restoration, community engagement and national and international collaboration.
