Unemployment rate in the country in June 2025 - 5.6%
  • The unemployment rate for both men and women in the country remained at 5.6 percent in June 2025. The unemployment rate for women decreased to 5.6 percent in June from 5.8 percent in May.
  • The unemployment rate for those aged 15-29 increased to 15.3 percent in June from 15 percent in May. Increased urban unemployment: The unemployment rate in urban areas increased to 18.8 percent in June from 17.9 percent in May. The unemployment rate in rural areas was 13.7 percent in May. It increased to 13.8 percent in June.
  • Labour force participation rate: The labour force participation rate (LFPR) among persons aged 15 years and above was 54.2 per cent in June. It was 54.8 per cent in May.
  • Similarly, the labour force participation rate for persons aged 15 years and above in June was 56.1 per cent in rural areas and 50.4 per cent in urban areas.
  • As per the situation of the 7 days preceding the survey, the labour force participation rate among males aged 15 years and above in June was 78.1 per cent in rural areas and 75 per cent in urban areas. 
  • In May, the labour force participation rate among males of the same age was 78.3 per cent in rural areas and 75.1 per cent in urban areas. Labour force-population ratio: The labour force-population ratio refers to the number of workers employed in the total population.
  • The labour force-population ratio among the population aged 15 years and above in rural areas was 53.3 per cent in June and 46.8 per cent in urban areas. This took the total labour force-population ratio among the population aged 15 years and above in rural and urban areas to 51.2 per cent in June, as against 51.7 per cent in May.
  • In order to accurately count the number of workers in the country, reforms were made in the periodic labour force census procedure in January last year. Accordingly, the first phase of the census was conducted in the June quarter of 2025 across India on a sample of 7,520.
  • A total of 89,493 households (49,335 rural and 40,158 urban) were surveyed during this period. It was reported that a total of 3,80,538 people participated in this survey, including 2,17,251 in rural areas and 1,63,287 in urban areas.
Union Cabinet approves implementation of Pradhan Mantri Dhan-Dhanya Krishi Yojana in 100 districts
  • The Union Cabinet, chaired by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, has approved the Pradhan Mantri Dhan-Dhanya Krishi Yojana. The scheme will be implemented in 100 identified districts for a period of six years starting from the current financial year (2025-26). The scheme will focus on achieving rapid growth in the agriculture sector and its allied sectors.
  • The scheme aims to improve agricultural productivity, crop diversification, promote sustainable farming practices, increase post-harvest grain storage capacity, improve irrigation facilities and facilitate access to credit to farmers. 
  • The scheme is being implemented as announced in the Budget for the current financial year (2025-26). The scheme will be implemented in collaboration with 11 Central Government departments, State Government schemes and the private sector in addition to 36 existing schemes.
  • 100 districts with low productivity, low crop production and low credit availability to farmers will be identified and the scheme will be implemented in those districts. In each state or union territory, the districts where the scheme will be implemented will be selected based on the number of districts, net crop area and share of land. However, at least 1 district will be selected from each state.
  • Committees will be constituted at the district, state and national levels for planning, implementation and monitoring. The progress of the scheme in each district will be monitored on a monthly basis.
Cabinet approves investment of Rs 7,000 crore by NLC in its subsidiaries
  • The Union Cabinet has approved investment of up to Rs 7,000 crore by Neyveli Lignite Limited (NLC) in its subsidiary NLC India Renewable Energy Limited. The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, today approved a special exemption for NLC from the existing investment guidelines for Navaratna PSUs.
  • This exemption will help NLC achieve its ambitious target of 10.11 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030 and expand to 32 GW by 2047. It is noteworthy that the Union Government has committed to generating 500 GW of non-coal energy capacity by 2030 as part of the Panchamrit targets. NLC can play a significant role in this.
  • NLC is currently operating 7 renewable energy plants with a total installed capacity of 2 GW. Today's Cabinet decision is expected to help India become the leader in green energy by reducing its dependence on coal and imports and expanding reliable 24x7 power supply across the country. Apart from having an impact on the environment, the decision will also support inclusive economic growth by creating jobs.
Union Cabinet approves increase in allocation for renewable energy to Rs. 20,000 crore
  • The Union Government has decided to increase the allocation for National Thermal Power Corporation's Green Energy Plant from Rs. 7500 crore to Rs. 20,000 crore to increase renewable energy capacity to 60 GW by 2032 in Maharashtra. The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, has given its approval for this.
  • Renewable energy projects create direct and indirect jobs and provide opportunities for local companies, micro, small and medium enterprises. Green energy companies will help achieve their goal of net zero emissions by 2070, as they achieve their goal.
