8,000-year-old Neolithic stone tool discovered near Panrutti
- A stone tool used by Neolithic people dating back to about 8,000 years ago was discovered near Panrutti in Cuddalore district. The Neolithic tool recently discovered in the Thenpennai River in Uluthampattu is 2.5 cm high and 2 cm long. It is a blade type used to cut animal skin, and its age is about 8,000 years old.
- The discovery in this area is similar to the one found in the Odappankuppam area of Cuddalore district. Moreover, the newly discovered Neolithic tool is evidence to strengthen previous discoveries.
- The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has successfully developed an indigenous nanoporous multilayer high-pressure polymeric membrane for desalinization of sea water and making it potable.
- The Defence Materials Research and Development Organisation, a Kanpur-based DRDO laboratory, has developed the technology for desalination plant on board Indian Coast Guard ships. The development was completed in a record time of eight months.
- The initial technical trials were successfully conducted on the existing desalination plant on a Coast Guard patrol vessel. The initial safety and performance tests of the polymeric membranes were found to be completely satisfactory.
- Final operational clearance will be given after 500 hours of operational testing. Currently, the unit is under trial. After some modifications, the membrane will be a boon for desalination of sea water in coastal areas. This is another step in the journey of self-reliant India.
