Defence Ministry approves procurement projects worth Rs 54,000 crore to modernise Indian Army
- The Defence Acquisition Council, headed by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, yesterday (20.03.25) approved the proposed procurement projects worth Rs 54,000 crore to modernise the Indian Army.
- Accordingly, permission has been given to buy a 1,350 HP engine for the T-90 Bhishma tanks in the Indian Army, to upgrade the existing 1000 HP engine. This will improve the mobility of these tanks on the battlefield, especially at high altitudes, by increasing the power-to-weight ratio.
- The Indian Army is being modernised. The army is currently using 105 and 130 mm artillery. The Defence Acquisition Council had already approved the purchase of 155 mm anti-tank guns (ADAGs) worth Rs 7,000 crore in exchange for these. In this case, the Cabinet Committee on Defence headed by Prime Minister Modi has also approved this.
- Under this deal, 307 modern guns and 327 vehicles to tow them will be purchased in the next 2 years. These guns will be sent to the China and Pakistan border areas.
- Seven candidates competed for the 10th President at the 144th International Olympic Committee meeting held in Costa Navarino, Greece. 41-year-old Zimbabwe Sports Minister Christy Coventry won the secret ballot among them.
- Thomas Bach, who was first elected as the President in 2013, became the President again in 2021. Christie Coventry has been elected as his successor. She is expected to take office on June 23.
- Christie is also the first woman and the first African to serve as president of the International Olympic Committee. Christie, a two-time Olympic gold medalist in swimming, will serve for an eight-year term until 2033.
