US withdrawal from UN Human Rights Council
- The US and Israel withdrew from the UN Human Rights Council in 2019, accusing it of acting against Israel, and from UNESCO, accusing it of erasing Jewish history. At that time, Donald Trump was the US President.
- However, the government led by Joe Biden, who succeeded him, rejoined the US in the UN Human Rights Council in 2021. In this context, Donald Trump won the election held in November 2024 and took office as the country's president again last month.
- Trump has now issued an order to withdraw the US from the UN Human Rights Council again. With this, US funding to the organization is completely stopped.
- The Ministry of Defence has signed contracts worth Rs 10,147 crore with Economic Explosives Limited (EEL) and Munitions India Limited (MIL) for procurement of various types of rocket launchers.
- A further agreement was signed with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) for power software development. The agreements were signed in the presence of Defence Secretary Shri Rajesh Kumar Singh in New Delhi.
- These agreements will play a key role in strengthening the firing capability of the Indian Army to carry out precision and long-range strikes. Apart from enhancing national defence capability, these projects will also boost Indian MSMEs. They will create direct and indirect employment.
- This procurement is a major step towards modernizing India's defense infrastructure and developing domestic industries.
