3 Committee composition headed by Justice Satyanarayan to amend new criminal laws - Chief Minister MK Stalin orders
  • Three new criminal laws have come into effect in India from July 1. The Indian Penal Code (IPC) of 1860 has now been replaced by the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The Criminal Procedure Code of 1973 (CrPC) has been replaced by the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS).
  • The Indian Evidence Act of 1872 (IE Act) was renamed the Bharatiya Sakshya Act (BSA). Lawyers, social activists and political parties have strongly opposed many sections of these laws. States including Tamil Nadu have expressed strong opposition to these three laws being named in Hindi.
  • As these Acts are included in Schedule-III of the Constitution of India, there should have been extensive consultation with the State Government. However, the Tamil Nadu government protested that these laws were enacted without any such happening and without giving the states an opportunity to express their views.
  • In this case, the Tamil Nadu government has set up a committee headed by retired Justice Sathyanarayanan to examine the 3 new criminal laws implemented by the central government.
  • Chief Minister Stalin has said that this committee will examine what amendments can be brought in these laws at the state level and give a report to the government in a month.
The National Commission for Minorities discussed with the State and Union Territory Governments the implementation of the Anand Marriage Act
  • A video party meeting with 18 state and union territory governments was held today under the chairmanship of the National Commission for Minorities to discuss the implementation and registration of Sikh marriages under the Anand Marriage Act.
  • Some states including Jharkhand, Maharashtra and Meghalaya have announced implementation of this law. Other States and Union Territories have promised to implement the Act within two months.
