Country's coal import rate to decline in FY 2023-24
- The compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of the country's coal imports was 21.48 per cent during FY 2004-05 to FY 2013-14. It declined to just 2.49 per cent during FY 2014-15 to FY 2023-24.
- Furthermore, the CAGR contribution of coal imports during the period from FY 2004-05 to FY 2013-14 was 13.94 percent. It has declined to about -2.29 percent over the next 10 years.
- The country is making progress towards self-sufficiency in energy security during 2014-24 by focusing on developing domestic coal resources and introducing innovative technologies in coal utilization.
- According to the report, the coal import has seen a decline in the CGR. Earlier, the Ministry of Coal had reported that India's coal import has increased by 13.2 percent in the month of April. It was reported that there has been an increase of 1.74 crore tonnes of non-coking coal in the total import of the assessment month.
- This was 1.52 crore tonnes in April 2023. Import of coking coal increased from 47.7 lakh tonnes to 49.7 lakh tonnes. Coal import was 2.40 crore tonnes in the previous month of March. In comparison, the ministry had said that April's coal imports increased by 8.93 percent.
- India's coal imports for the full fiscal year 2023-24 increased by 7.7 percent to 26.82 crore tonnes. This was 24.91 crore tonnes in the previous financial year 2022-23, data showed.
