NEET Exemption Resolution Passed in Tamil Nadu Assembly
- In addition to exempting Tamil Nadu from the NEET examination, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin brought a separate resolution in the Legislative Assembly urging the central government to amend the Medical Commission Act so as to abandon the NEET examination.
- Following this, a separate resolution brought by Chief Minister M.K.Stalin was unanimously passed by a voice vote in the assembly. BJP members walked out of the assembly protesting the resolution.
Discovery of flint seal at Chennanur Excavations
- Excavation is being carried out on behalf of Tamil Nadu government to collect Neolithic evidences in Sennanur, Krishnagiri District, Uthangarai Circle. Previous excavations have yielded a large number of antiquities. 5,000 years old fine tools, neolithic handaxes, iron age black and red potsherds, iron scraps and rock paintings have been found on the surface of the foothills here.
- Bricks found in a well here are 2,000 years old, suggesting that this place may have been a settlement of Sangam people.
- Subsequently, the Tamil Nadu government is carrying out excavation work here. While the work was going on here for the last one week, on Monday, the excavation team found a broken Neolithic tool made of stone dating back four thousand years.
- At this stage, in the area where the excavation is going on, a flint seal was found at a depth of 61 cm in the excavation pit called A2. This seal measures 4.5 cm in length and 3.2 cm in diameter. This stamp may have been used to decorate the rim of the pottery.
A composite index of eight major industries in May
- The composite index of eight major industries increased by 6.3 percent (provisional) in May 2024 as compared to May 2023 index. Production of electricity, coal, steel and natural gas has risen to record levels.
- The final growth rate of the composite index of eight major industries for February 2024 was 7.1 percent. The overall growth rate for 2024-25 was 6.5 per cent (provisional) as compared to the April-May period of the previous financial year.
- Cement production fell by nil point 8 percent in May 2024 compared to May 2023.
- Coal production increased by 10.2 percent in May 2024 compared to May 2023.
- Crude oil production declined by 1.1 percent in May 2024 compared to May 2023.
- Electricity generation increased by 12.8 percent in May 2024 compared to May 2023.
- Fertilizer production declined by 1.7 percent in May 2024 compared to May 2023.
- Natural gas production increased by 7.5 percent in May 2024 compared to May 2023.
- Production of refined petroleum products increased by zero point 5 percent in May 2024 compared to May 2023.
- Steel production increased by 7.6 percent in May 2024 compared to May 2023.
Monthly Review of Central Government Accounts upto May 2024
- Monthly review of central government accounts up to May 2024 has been consolidated and reports have been published. The total revenue of the central government till May 2024 was Rs.5,72,845 crore.
- This is 18.6 per cent of the total revenue in the 2024-25 budget estimate of which tax revenue (attributable to the central government) is Rs 3,19,036 crore, non-tax revenue is Rs 2,51,722 crore and debt collection revenue is Rs 2,087 crore. The tax distribution given by the Central Government to the State Governments during this period was Rs.1,39,751 crore. This is Rs 21,471 crore more than disbursed in the corresponding period of the previous year.
- The total expenditure of the central government till May 2024 is Rs.6,23,460 crore (13.1 per cent of the budget estimate for 2024-25). Out of this, Rs.4,79,835 crores are on revenue account; 1,43,625 crore in capital account. Of the total revenue expenditure, Rs.1,23,810 crore is for interest payments; 54,688 crores in bulk grants account.
