Appointment of first Chairman of GST Appellate Tribunal

  • Union Finance and Corporate Affairs Minister Mrs. Nirmala Sitharaman administered the oath of office to retired Justice Sanjay Kumar Mishra who has been appointed as the Chairman of the GST Appellate Tribunal.
  • Retired Justice Mishra's appointment marks the beginning of functioning of the GST Appellate Tribunal, an important body for adjudicating GST-related disputes. The GST Appellate Tribunal is an Appellate Authority established under the Central Goods and Services Tax Act, 2017.
  • It is to hear various appeals under the respective State / Union Territories GST Acts against the orders of the First Appellate Authority. As per the approval of the GST Council, the government has announced the primary session to be held in New Delhi and 31 state sessions at various locations across the country.
  • The process of appointment of Judicial Members and Technical Members is already underway. The Tribunal will ensure speedy, fair and effective resolution of Goods and Services Tax related issues, while significantly reducing the burden on the High Courts.
  • The establishment of the GST Appellate Tribunal will further improve the efficiency of the GST system in India and foster a more transparent and efficient tax environment in the country. The first chairman of the GST Appellate Tribunal, retired Justice Misra was the Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court.
4th Session of India-Ghana Joint Trade Group
  • Additional Secretary, Department of Commerce, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Mr. Amardeep Singh Bhatia and Ambassador of India to the Republic of Ghana, Mr. Manish Gupta and Economic Adviser, Department of Commerce, Ms. Priya P. Nair hosted a Joint Trade Group meeting with Ghanaian trade officials from 2nd to 3rd May, 2024 in Accra.
  • The Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry of the Republic of Ghana, Michael Okyere – Baffi, the Additional Secretary to the Department of Trade, Mr. Amardeep Singh Bhatia co-chaired the meeting.
  • Both sides held a comprehensive review of recent developments in bilateral trade and investment relations. Both parties discussed the possibility of a Memorandum of Understanding on digital transformation solutions; They also discussed the opportunities offered by the Local Currency Settlement System and the African Continental Free Trade Agreement.
  • Both sides identified a number of areas to enhance bilateral trade and mutually beneficial investments.
  • This includes cooperation in sectors such as pharmaceuticals, healthcare, information and communication technology, agriculture and food processing, renewable energy, power sector, digital economy and digital infrastructure, key minerals, textiles and apparel.
