Same-Sex Marriage Law - Thai Parliament approves
  • The Marriage Equality Bill, which would legalize same-sex marriages in Thailand, has been passed by Parliament. The bill legalizes equal rights for those who marry regardless of gender.
  • The Bill has replaced the words 'man and woman' as 'individuals' and the words 'husband and wife' as 'married partners' in the Civil and Commercial Codes.
  • After discussion on the bill, when the vote was taken today (27.03.2024), out of total 415 members, 400 members voted in favor of the bill. Thus the bill was passed with the support of majority of the members.
  • This Act provides opportunities for these couples to get full legal rights as well as financial and medical rights.
  • Subsequently, the passed bill will be sent to the Senate and then to the King for royal assent. The bill is expected to pass unopposed in the Senate as the Senate usually accepts an amendment passed by the Lower House. It will then be sent to the King for approval. The Act will come into effect once the King gives his assent.
  • If the law goes into effect, Thailand will become the first country in Southeast Asia to pass such a law. Thailand will be the third country in Asia to implement this law after Taiwan and Nepal.
