- While the ban on onion has been imposed till the end of this month in order to prevent the Lok Sabha polls from increasing, the Directorate General of Foreign Trade has issued a statement that the ban on onion exports will be extended until further notice.
- India accounts for more than 50 percent of Asia's onion exports. In the last financial year ending March 31, 2023, it is noteworthy that 2.5 million metric tonnes of onions were not exported from India till now in history.
- In this case, neighboring countries such as Bangladesh, Nepal and Malaysia, which depend heavily on India's onion exports, and the United Arab Emirates are also said to be affected by the central government's announcement.
- As onion prices have increased in the above countries, the situation indicates that onion exports have increased in China and Egypt.
