President gives assent to Uttarakhand State General Civil Code Bill
  • The General Civil Code, one of the key policies of the central BJP government, was tabled and passed in the BJP-ruled Uttarakhand state assembly. Amid heavy opposition from opposition parties, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Thami tabled the General Civil Code Bill in the Assembly with slogans from ruling BJP MLA Kaliman such as Jaisreeram and Vande Mataram.
  • While there was a debate on this, the General Civil Code was passed by a voice vote in the Uttarakhand State Assembly. It was sent to the President as it had to be sent to the President for his approval to make it law.
  • In this situation, President Draupathi Murmu has approved the General Civil Act passed by the Uttarakhand State Assembly. With this, Uttarakhand will become the first state in the country to implement Common Civil Code.
  • Earlier, during the 2022 Uttarakhand state assembly elections, the BJP had promised to pass the General Civil Code in its manifesto. Accordingly, the Uttarakhand government constituted a special committee headed by retired Supreme Court Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai, retired Justice Pramod Kohli, social activist Manu Kaur, former Chief Secretary Shatrughan Singh and Doon University Vice-Chancellor Surekha Dangwal to prepare the General Civil Code Bill in 2022. .
  • The team prepared a detailed draft of 740 pages in four volumes and submitted it to the government. Accordingly, the Uttarakhand General Civil Code Bill was drafted, tabled, passed and now approved. It is noteworthy that Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Thami has said that the General Civil Law is not against anyone, it is equality and has equal rights.
September 17 Hyderabad Liberation Day - Announcement by Central Govt
  • Even after the independence of the country on August 15, 1947, the then Hyderabad region did not get freedom. On September 17, 1948, after 13 months, the state of Hyderabad got its freedom from the Nizam rule through a police operation called "Operation Polo" at the initiative of the then Home Minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.
  • To commemorate this, there were demands from the people of the area to declare September 17 as Hyderabad Liberation Day. In this situation, it has been reported that the central government has decided to celebrate the 17th of September every year as Hyderabad Liberation Day to remember those who sacrificed their lives for the liberation of Hyderabad and to instill patriotism in the minds of the youth.
  • The integration of the region with India was delayed due to the separatist struggle over whether the princely state of Hyderabad should merge with Pakistan or remain a separate state.

  • The facilities inaugurated today are Semiconductor Manufacturing Plant at Tolera Special Investment Zone, Gujarat, Outsourcing Semiconductor Manufacturing and Testing Facility at Morigaon, Assam, and Outsourcing Semiconductor Manufacturing and Testing Facility at Sanand, Gujarat.
Union Cabinet approves Agreement between India and UAE on Empowerment and Operational Cooperation of India-Middle East European Economic Corridor
  • The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi today gave post-implementation approval to the Inter-Governmental Framework Agreement signed between the Government of India and the Government of the United Arab Emirates during their high-level visit on February 13, 2024. 
  • The agreement aims to enhance bilateral relations and further strengthen ties between the two countries in the ports, maritime and cargo transport sectors. 
  • The agreement covers areas of cooperation between the two countries with a view to exploring further possibilities for future joint investment and cooperation related to the development of the India-Central European Economic Corridor.
  • The agreement contains a comprehensive framework for cooperation between the two countries. This cooperation will be based on a mutually agreed set of principles, guidelines and agreements consistent with the relevant rules and regulations of the jurisdiction of the countries.
Union Cabinet approves two lines for Delhi Metro Phase IV projects from Lajpat Nagar to Saket G-Block and Inderlok to Indraprastha
  • Prime Minister Mr. The Union Cabinet chaired by Narendra Modi approved two new lines of Delhi Metro's Phase IV project. These are expected to further improve metro connectivity in the national capital.
  • Two routes – Inderlok – Indraprastha 12.377 km, Lajpat Nagar – Saket G Block 8.385 km. The total project cost of these two lines of Delhi Metro's Phase IV project is Rs 8,399 crore. Funding for this will be provided by the Central Government, Delhi Government and international financial agencies.

  • The Union Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi today approved the Memorandum of Understanding between India and Bhutan regarding the supply of petroleum, oil, lubricants and related products from India to Bhutan.
  • It aims to benefit India and its citizens with improved economic and trade ties with Bhutan, particularly in the hydrocarbon sector, irrespective of gender, class or income discrimination.
