Joint Director Fire Department Priya Ravichandran appointed as IAS officer
  • Priya Ravichandran, a woman officer working in the Tamil Nadu Fire Department, has been appointed as IAS from the Non state Civil service quota. The Union Government has issued an order in this regard. Priya Dova has become an IAS category officer for the year 2022 from the state government service.
  • In 2003, Priya was working as a Group 1 officer of Tamil Nadu Government. He worked in the fire department and rose to the position of associate director. Group 1 officers are appointed as IAS officers for certain vacant posts every year as per the recommendation of the State Government.
  • It is noteworthy that this is the first time in Tamil Nadu that an IAS officer from the fire department has become an officer.
The Central Government has constituted the Sixteenth Finance Commission headed by Dr. Arvind Panagariya
  • According to Article 280 (1) of the Constitution of India, the Sixteenth Finance Commission has been constituted by the Central Government with the assent of the President.
  • Dr. Arvind Panagariya, former vice-chairman of NITI Aayog and professor at Columbia University, will chair it. The appointment of members of the Sixteenth Finance Committee will be announced later. Mr Rithvik Ranjanam Pandey has been appointed as the Secretary of the Finance Committee. The notification issued today (31-12-2023) also contains the regulations for the Sixteenth Finance Commission.
  • The Sixteenth Finance Commission will make recommendations on the following aspects. Apportioning between the Central Government and the States the net proceeds of taxes to be apportioned under Chapter 1, Part 12 of the Constitution and allocating among the States their respective shares of such proceeds;
  • The grant of revenue to the States from the Consolidated Fund of India and the principles governing the sums payable to the States under Article 275 of the Constitution as grant-in-aid out of their revenue for purposes other than those specified in the provisions of clause (1) of that Act; And
  • Necessary measures to increase the State Consolidated Fund to improve the financial resources of the Panchayats and Municipalities in the State based on the recommendations of the State Finance Commission.
  • The Sixteenth Finance Commission will review the existing arrangements for financing disaster management initiatives with respect to funds set up under the Disaster Management Act -2005 (53 of 2005) and make appropriate recommendations thereon.
  • The Sixteenth Funding Commission is for a period of five years starting from 1st April 2026 to 31st October 2025.
