Minister Udayanidhi Stalin launched the Health Walk program in Chennai
  • Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin today launched the project of constructing 'Health Walk' roads in all the districts of Tamil Nadu in Besant Nagar, Chennai. 
  • In Japan, 8 km health walk roads have been constructed to inculcate the habit of walking among the people. As a person walks 10,000 steps daily, the body is healthy, so these roads are constructed accordingly.
10,000 houses for Sri Lankan workers with the help of the Indian government - Ranil Wickramasinghe, Nirmala Sitharaman laid the foundation stone
  • During the Sri Lankan civil war, the United Progressive Alliance government led by former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh offered to build 50,000 houses with Indian funding for internally displaced Tamils.
  • Of these, 46,000 houses were built and handed over in the northern and eastern provinces of Sri Lanka. Also, 3,700 houses were built in the hilly areas inhabited by tea plantation Tamils.
  • During his tour of Sri Lanka in 2017, Prime Minister Modi visited the hilly areas where the majority of Indians live. At that time, 'India will cooperate with the Sri Lankan government's projects for the education, social and economic development of the people of the highlands. 
  • Modi announced that the Government of India plans to build 4,000 houses for the hilly Tamils, and an additional 10,000 houses will be built.
  • In this case, in view of the completion of 200 years since the people of the highlands were brought from Tamil Nadu, a conference titled 'Nam 200' was held in Colombo in the evening on behalf of the Sri Lankan Labor Congress.
  • In this, Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe and Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman jointly laid the foundation stone for the project to build 10,000 houses with the financial support of India at the Mount Verman tea plantation located in Kottakalai area.
  • A meeting was held between President Ranil Wickremesinghe and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman at the Presidential Palace. In this, a fund of 15 million US dollars was given on behalf of India to strengthen the historical and cultural Buddhist relations between India and Sri Lanka.
  • Also, Nirmala Sitharaman, who inaugurated the branch of State Bank of India in Trikonamalai, visited Thirukonaswaram Shiva Temple and Nallur Murugan Temple in Jaffna.
Maritime Security Summit 2023 between Indian Navy and Sri Lankan Navy
  • The 33rd Annual International Maritime Border Meeting between representatives of the Navies and Coast Guards of India and Sri Lanka was held aboard INS Sumitra on the India-Sri Lanka Maritime Boundary Line near Kodiyakarai in Pak Strait on Friday. It also provides an opportunity to improve communication, relations and coordination of operations between the Navies and Commands of the two countries.
  • Sri Lankan delegation led by Commander North Central Naval Area, Sri Lanka Navy Rear Admiral PA KS Panagoda, Indian delegation led by Flag Officer Commanding Tamil Nadu and Puducherry Naval Area Ravi Kumar Dhingra, representative of Coast Guard Regional Headquarters (East), Security Adviser of Indian Embassy in Colombo and Senior officials from both the countries participated in the meeting.
  • During the meeting, the Navy and the Coast Guard discussed maritime security in the Gulf of Bagh and Gulf of Mannar, safety of fishermen and measures to prevent smuggling of prohibited goods. 
  • Ways to improve the existing communication network and timely sharing of information between the two navies and the Coast Guard were also discussed in detail.
  • Both sides reaffirmed the importance of mutual cooperation in operations. They also agreed to take forward decisions to strengthen maritime security in the region.
