World Bank approves Rs 5,000 crore for Sri Lanka
  • Neighboring Sri Lanka was stuck in a severe economic crisis last year. Following this, protests intensified across the country demanding the resignation of President Gotabaya Rajapakse. Gotabaya Rajapakse, who resigned after that, fled the country.
  • India has provided loan assistance to Sri Lanka which is in dire straits. In this context, the World Bank has approved a financial assistance of about Rs.5742 crore to help the poor and vulnerable sections of Sri Lanka. Out of this, Rs 4100 crore will be allocated for budget assistance and Rs 1642 crore for social security projects, the World Bank said in a statement.

  • Tamil Nadu DGP Shailendrababu is retiring tomorrow and Shankar Jiwal, who was currently the Chennai Police Commissioner, has been appointed as Tamil Nadu DGP.

2nd meeting of the India-Tanzania Joint Security Cooperation Committee was held in Arusha
  • The 2nd meeting of the India-Tanzania Joint Security Cooperation Committee was held in Arusha on 28 and 29 June 2023. In this meeting, Indian Defense Department Joint Secretary Mr. The Indian team led by Amitabh Prasad participated. The Indian delegation included senior officials from the Ministry of Defense and the Armed Forces. Indian Ambassador to Tanzania Mr. Binai S. Pradhan also attended this meeting.
  • It discussed enhancing bilateral cooperation in strengthening security in the Indian Ocean region. The Indian delegation discussed various aspects of the Indian Defense Department from manufacturing to export of military equipment. Both sides agreed on a 5-year action plan for cooperation in the field of defence.
  • The plan includes bilateral military training, strengthening maritime security, enhancing cooperation in infrastructure, defense equipment and technology. As part of this meeting, representatives of Indian Defense Public Sector Enterprises held special consultations with the Tanzanian side.
  • The participation of the Indian delegation in this Joint Security Cooperation Committee meeting is expected to further strengthen India-Tanzania security relations.
