History

• WORLD DAY TO COMBAT DESERTIFICATION AND DROUGHT 2023: Desertification (the process of land degradation in arid, semi-arid, and dry sub-humid regions) was identified as one of the greatest problems in sustainable development during the 1992 Rio Earth Summit.
• Two years later, in 1994, the United Nations established the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) to address this issue. As a part of this effort, 17th June was declared as World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought.
