BUDDHA PURNIMA 2O23: Celebrated as the birth anniversary of Lord Buddha, Buddha Jayanti is celebrated in most of East Asia and South Asia commemorating the birth of Prince Siddhartha Gautama, later the Gautama Buddha, who was the founder of Buddhism.
This year will celebrate the 2585th birth anniversary of Gautam Buddha. It is believed that Gautama Buddha attained Enlightenment on this day. Buddha Purnima is also known as Buddha Jayanti, Vesak, Vaishaka and Buddha's Birthday.
The time of Gautama Buddha's birth and death is uncertain. However, most historians date his lifetime between 563-483 BC. Most people consider Lumbini, Nepal as the birthplace of Buddha. Buddha died at the age of 80 in Kushinagar, Uttar Pradesh.
According to Drik Panchang, in North India Buddha is considered the 9th incarnation and Lord Krishna is the 8th incarnation of Lord Vishnu. However, Buddha is never considered an Avatar of Vishnu in South Indian belief.
In South India, Balarama is considered as the 8th incarnation and Krishna is the 9th incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Balarama is counted as an incarnation of Vishnu by the majority of Vaishnava movements. Even Buddhists do not consider Buddha as an incarnation of Lord Vishnu.
